For more regular updates from Home Designing, join us on Facebook.

If you’re reading this through email, please consider sending this email to a few of your friends that are into interior design.

Though small in size, the interior layout feels spacious thanks to a minimalist aesthetic and also a light color scheme of white walls and natural wood tone. A silver flooring lamp arcs with a neat two seater gray couch in the open plan living room, with a small accent chair situated on the other side of the sofa design.

Where the indoor vertical backyard reaches the ceiling, in the second floor of the house, there’s a white bedroom located on a mezzanine construction. Clear glass balustrades keep the green wall fully on view beside the bed, whilst making safe the difference between the edge of the mezzanine platform and the planting wall. At the foot of the mattress, a door leads off the bedroom into a narrow storage space, and into a separate bathroom. An outdoor deck encompasses the whole upper floor.
We can also observe the position of the door to the upstairs storage area and the second floor bathroom. The shaded area represents the outdoor deck.

A set of indoor plants plants put in pots on the ground next to the bespoke double sided living wall design at the centre of the downstairs floor plan.

The floor floor plan indicates the indoor garden opposite the entrance door of the two story loft space; the staircase layout to the mezzanine bedroom located just behind it. From here we can see the proximity of the dining area to the separate kitchen. A very generous walk in cupboard is installed directly next door to the kitchen, which is obtained via a dedicated laundry room. At the close of the laundry room, there’s a convenient downstairs restroom attached.

Back downstairs we have a peek in the wood and white kitchen in the last. The area has a special half and half design that cuts it down the middle. Each of the wood units are on the left of this galley kitchen design with a gray counter, and an entire wall of white units with matching backsplash and counter fill up the proper. Warm sunlight washes down the kitchen, which makes it a nice and welcoming space to come into and cook.
These units aren’t the kitchen, that is actually located through a doorway to the right. It’s probable that the cupboards nearest the entryway are used for general house storage, with the components on the right home tableware and an integrated wine cooler.

The indoor plants flourish in the sunlight that blesses the home, and the reflected backing of the dwelling wall shines right back through the gaps.
In seeing this 1 bedroom loft, situated in the Jung-Wha-dong neighbourhood of the Jungnang-gu district, Seoul, we find a soothing living wall with a double sided design. The distinctive modern interior is situated up on the upper floor of a 30 year old industrial construction, with an area of 80 square metres, which can be split to two floors. The custom layout and bespoke furniture was designed by architects Arcave to suit the wishes of a professional female homeowner using a profound interest in well-being. It was the client who requested the creation of the double elevation, double sided green wall because the special revitalising centerpiece for her home.

Sunlight spills down the stairs and green wall from a string picture windows which are located on the second floor of the loft home.

Wood ceiling panels join the dining area together with the house entryway.

The exact minimalist staircase layout has an easy white powder coated metal banister, which increases the full height of the staircase ascent with no accession of spindles.
Slivers of silver glint from supporting the green tumbling foliage.

The inside living wall also serves as a gorgeous space divider, offering a visual buffer between the home entryway and the couch with office. Because this room divider doesn’t touch the walls, each one of the pure light through the windows on each side is free to flow into the parts of this room.

There is a house workspace located to one side of the main living area, where a table stands in a ideal angle upward against the tv wall, in a peninsula fashion. The desk chair can be found to face into the lounge instead of looking out toward the chimney, although this could immediately be reconfigured to match the mood and activity available.

Penthouse Bar and Grill (Bangkok, THAILAND) ★★★★☆

Mom’s lunar birthday is coming up in two days (yes, she looks in the lunar calendar for all ) which is exactly on our journey day (going into the airport at 8am that day!) . Since our program will be jam packed in the previous couple of days, I thought we ought to squeeze in her birthday dinner two days ahead of time.

With everyone out of gas to the tail end of this excursion and little nugget fallen sick, I was guessing that no one would like to sit through a 3-hour multi-course fine-dining supper tonight. But I believed we needed to do something special for your birthday girl and that is where Penthouse Bar and Grill in Park Hyatt Bangkok comes in. The award-winning rooftop bar on the top of the grill restaurant is somewhere to see and be seen, with live music and scenic view of town. Too bad little nugget wasn’t feeling well so he is commanding a great deal of attention during the night. So, I didn’t end up with the chance to check out the rooftop bar myself (It is hard to be a fantastic dad and a foodie at precisely the same time, trust me) .

I can not say enough about the support being provided here at Penthouse. We were thoroughly amused right from begin to finish by a very careful and professional support staff showcasing exactly what 5-star hospitality was all about. Our small nugget was even offered a free tour of the kitchen (I was told) and came back with a free ice-cream in his hand. That’s really the best medicine for anyone who’s fallen child ill or adult.

Caesar salad (530 Baht) – After some nice homemade bread, our starters arrived one by one in rapid fire. The Caesar was, well very Caesar-like with crispy romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, crispy parma ham and croutons.

Oven roasted beetroot (460 Baht) – But I love our other salad a lot more. As a sucker for beetroot, this was simply ideal.

I thought they did well by fitting the sweetness with a little bit of bitterness (arugula), acidity (sour cream) and herby notes (fresh herbs) there.

Crab cakes (590 Baht) – The single dish that overlooked the cut tonight. This was really quite decent considering the absence of lump crab meat there. The tarragon mustard, fennel and citrus coleslaw could not really save the day.

Grilled calamari (790 Baht) – Many local calamari in the grill and served with garlic butter, parsley and lemon juice. Very straightforward but very yummy.

Tagliatelle with cream sauce and bacon (? Baht) We asked the kitchen to prepare a simple pasta dish to the small one and they delivered! The tagliatelle was nice and al dente meshing nicely with the creamy butter sauce. Great article of cooking there and I love how they go out entertaining diners’ special request.

Not awful.

Prime corn-fed ribeye (1,550 Baht) – We don’t have a meat fan on the side but that does not mean we should move to a steakhouse without ordering some charred beef. Like most times, I chose US prime beef over Australian ones and it seemed like a pretty intelligent choice for me personally. Not just mom, I’m a happy camper too. Along with the BBQ sauce was not on the top like a few of those steakhouses. Love the refreshing notes in the kaffir and coriander lime too.

Nobody desired dessert tonight but the restaurant amazed mother with a small birthday cake (bite-sized). This was the highlight of the night there. Obviously, small nugget didn’t shy away from giving grandma a huge kiss.

Penthouse Bar and Grill reminded me of another luxury American-style steakhouse we used to enjoy when Jelloman and I were still dating, New York Grill at Tokyo. It’s yet another Park Hyatt restaurant and yes, they appear to be quite good with steakhouses.

Obviously, my kid is not ill anymore following the ice-cream.

Grains de vanille (Kyoto, JAPAN) ★★★★☆

Kyoto is arguably the best spot to experience Japanese’s long heritage of Wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) in Japan but apart from traditional candies, in addition, there are a number of French patisseries in the early town which are worth a serious look. Since I’m free all morning, I thought that I must start the day by checking one of those French pastry stores off my list.

Located in an area near Karasuma Oike Station which is famous for its home furniture shops, Grains de vanille stands out with its cozy atmosphere and modern European style decoration.

Owner-chef Tsuda Reisuke (津田励祐) honed his abilities in Paris working at a number of the best pastry and chocolate stores such as Pierre Hermé and Jean-Paul Hévin prior to returning to Tokyo to build up his experience in Shiseido Parlour. In 2011, he opened his very own pastry shop, Grains de vanille at Kyoto.

Unlike some of the pastries we discovered in Kyoto, Chef Tsuda’s creations are authentically French with a nice touch of Japanese influence.

Among Chef Tsuda’s signature desserts is his Traditional mille-feuille topped with caramel cream. However, with 20 distinct kinds of cakes on display, I know that it’s not going to be an easy selection for me (One thing for certain, I will not be selecting the mille-feuille since I’m not much of a fan).

Here is what I call a great (and hearty) breakfast with sweets and floral tea.

It’s almost the tail end of the Japanese white peach season so maybe one of my final opportunity to taste their very best crop of white peach.

Momo (580 yen) – The delicate white peach mousse cake is nicely garnished with pieces of white cherry and cherry on top.

Underneath the rich white peach mousse are layers of light raspberry mousse, raspberry jam and buttery sponge cake. A genuine impressive pastry with different textures of cherry balancing the sweetness of white peach nicely.

What makes this cake so yummy besides the mild and yummy chocolate mousse would be the runny jasmine tea ganache, apricot compote and chocolate sponge lying beneath. A beautiful creation with a wonderful symphony of light, rich and fruity tastes. It had been finished elegantly with a piece of gold depart on top.

I guess the rumor about Pierre Hermé visiting this place twice is accurate. I can really see it happening.

Jiki Miyazawa じき 宮ざわ (Kyoto, JAPAN) ★★★★☆

Despite having 2 Michelin-starred restaurants under the name, Chef Masato Miyazawa is never a household name in Kyoto’s dining arena unless you’re a real pro. A 10-seater kappō restaurant (traditional counter-style Japanese restaurant) serving refined chakaiseki cuisine and it was an instant hit. Not surprisingly, it had been recognized in the inaugural Michelin guide for both Osaka and Kyoto in 2009 with a star which it kept ever since. In 2014, Chef Miyazawa left Jiki Miyazawa to start its fine-dining sister Godan Miyazawa in a quiet and unassuming residential area near Gojo. That too was awarded with a star shortly after. Like many upscale restaurants in Japan, they do not accept reservations directly from international clients so all bookings must come in the resort concierge. Because of the quick work by my hotel lodging, I was able to secure my booking months beforehand. For this meal, I’ve recruited Agent-I as my partner-in-crime since she was in town for a sightseeing excursion.

For a restaurant of its own caliber, lunch at Jiki Miyazawa is surprisingly affordable. There are three multi-course set menu provided at JPY3,500, JPY5,000 and JPY7,000 respectively. Because I was not especially hungry (after my breakfast de vanille)I went with the set that price JPY5,000.

After some welcoming sake, we were presented with the first class (or sakizuke) of the meal. Grilled octopus was served under a pile of diced watermelon and strawberry granita. A really wonderful play on contrasting temperatures and textures while the perilla flowers on top brought some extra kick to the dish.

Among the nicest thing about kappō-dining is the capability to see that our chef working behind the counter. The interactive dialog with Chef Takamoto Izumi really makes this a very distinctive dining experience. The steaming hot soup made with bonito and chamomile came with a tender slice of pike conger. Not bad.

Better was another path of bonito sashimi, which was sprinkled with fresh green onion and chamomile. It was matched with two distinctly different sauces, a sweet soy sauce (red) and sushi rice sauce (white) to get a surprisingly rounded finish.

The fourth dish was Chef Miyazawa’s yaki-gomadōfu, a signature dish that has taken him three years to perfect. The broiled tofu, made with sesame, kombu and kudzu (some sort of arrowroot) was beautifully matched with a rich and gooey sesame dressing and also a shower of grated sesame. A delicately balanced dish with different textures of sesame shining through brightly.

The barbecue dish was Japanese poultry with crispy eggplant, purple onion and ginger.

Many fish roes concealed beneath provided explosiveness into the dish.

Many Japanese Chirimen Jako or young hens to go for our perfectly soft and tender steamed rice (We were advised that the rice originated from three distinct cooking in order to create three varying textures and degree of moisture).

Dessert was a simple blend of green and purple grape on a little pool of wine jelly.

Along with a peanut shaped Japanese candy.

A kaiseki meal is not complete without a very simple tea ceremony.

I believed the portion was just Perfect.

It looked like we were the last party to finish so we immediately settled the invoice and spent some time checking out some souvenirs in the local Nishiki Market.

Contrary to my prior experience with kaiseki cuisine, Jiki Miyazawa offers a cuisine that’s deeply rooted in Western tradition but thoughtfully infused with contemporary twist. That is what makes it so exciting and unique.

Jiki Miyazawa unlocks 12:00pm-14:00pm for lunch and 17:30pm-21:00pm for supper. Its scheduled holidays are Thursdays and first Wednesday of the month. So yes, they are one of the few upscale Japanese restaurants which opens Sunday.

Chef’s Table at Lebua State Tower (Bangkok, THAILAND) ★★★★★

After spending the whole day at ICONSIAM, I took off my own in late day for arguably the most anticipated meal of this trip.

After a short ride on the shuttle boat to the Old Customs House on the Other Side of the river, I took a somewhat uncomfortable 10-minute walk through a shady part of the town before finally arriving at the reception of Lebua in State Tower.

Arriving half an hour means I have sufficient time to test out Sirocco at the rooftop.

For a city, Bangkok continues to add to its impressive number of rooftop bars and restaurants throughout the last few years but none had come close to fitting the stunning view and incredible vibe of Sirocco. Let’s hope I’m up for a drink or two here following my dinner at Chef’s Table. The opening chef of Caprice at Four Seasons Hong Kong who guided the French fine-dining restaurant into its three-Michelin-starred status between 2010 and 2014, came at Bangkok’s dining landscape back in 2015. He joined Lebua late last year on a new job, Chef’s Table that has been unveiled in the first quarter of 2019. It was an ambitious effort by Lebua’s possession to include more stars to the premise after Mezzaluna picked up two Michelin stars in the 2019 guide. Could Chef’s Table be the first restaurant in Bangkok to garner three stars? If there’s ever a chef who could propel a brand new restaurant to a three-star introduction, Chef Thierry is THE man.

At Chef’s Table, they are taking the open kitchen concept into a whole new level. An entirely opened cooking station that looks like a spaceship from certain angles. Not only did I get the front-row chairs to the open kitchen, but there was also a stunning town view behind my back. Too bad my family wasn’t here to enjoy it with us (children’s policy again!) .

Situated on the 61st floor of Lebua in State Tower, Chef’s Table opens from Tuesday to Sunday for dinner only. Dinner service begins at 6PM that is almost always a fantastic thing to get a family person like me. At the moment, the restaurant only offers a 7-course tasting menu but one has to pick from two choices for each one of the courses but for the cheese program.

It had been so pleasant to see Chef Thierry stepping from the kitchen into the dining room. We had a wonderful conversation before the meal and he promised to return together with his introductions on a number of those dishes throughout the evening.

I took my doctor’s guidance tonight. NO cheese and wine for tonight…

I had been offered a trio of little nibbles to begin the meal. It was followed by Norwegian salmon with potato wafer, potato emulsion plus a hint of yuzu. And a small duck foie gras terrine served on a crunchy tart beautifully adorned with pink radish. Very nice intense flavors from the foie gras backed up well by a nice touch of horseradish.

The housemade bread was adjacent. It had been served with a very special butter made locally with organic milk. This was really very soft and not surprisingly quite slick. I wasted no more time sampling some with the bread and it was very very yummy.

As I often say, part of the reason why I love eating bread Is Due to the butter!

The first course of the night was a familiar one. It’s one of Chef Thierry’s signature dishes at Caprice.

The chef’s amazing king crab tiramisu (no Tourteau crab in Bangkok?) is back. The king crab was matched with layers of marinaded tandoori veggies and rich mascarpone cream. A spectacular and elegant dish having a wonderful blend of candy and sweet flavors, offsetting the richness of the mascarpone cream beautifully.

This newest version of crab tiramisu came in a more gracious and refined way thanks in part to a more artistic presentation and there have been subtle changes like the coconut (white) and bell pepper (red) sauce that worked out beautifully.

Next up was Scottish langoustine and sweetbread lasagna, another specialty from the chef’s Caprice days but he made some small tweaks to it replacing chanterelles with tomato and fennel.

Frankly, I have not ever had this dish Caprice before so it was a completely different experience for me all together. I thought the delicate langoustine was very tasty combining well with the tomato, fennel and light shellfish emulsion for a sublime buttery end.

Despite my love to get a thick slab of pan-seared foie gras, I must admit I have not had one for years because of my self-imposed dietary restrictions. But if it’s coming from this gifted kitchen, perhaps I could consider making an exception.

The foie gras was cooked to pinpoint perfection but what made this dish particular was the sumptuous mosaic created with pomelo, finger carrot, lime caviar, kumquat and diced green mangoes, cutting through the richness of the foie gras beautifully with its lovely acidity. The heartwarming dish was finished off with a carrot velouté for a nice touch of comfort (and heat).

For my fish course, I’ve chosen the chef’s line caught sea bass delicately crusted with chorizo at the top. It had been served in an aromatic broth made with squid and fresh herbs.

Another totally executed dish with all the sea bass feeding off the flavorful bouillon and bed of diced red capsicum and squid cubes attractively.

The temptation of the most enviable duck out of Challans was obviously way too much for me to turn down. The skillfully cooked duck fillet was complemented nicely by different textures of red and white beetroot, celery purée and potato gnocchi while the ginger sauce brought some wonderful warmth. The crispy duck skin (Just lovely!) And succulent duck meat were beautifully matched with crunchy beetroot providing a terrific textural contrast while the celery purée and potato gnocchi supplied some softness into the dish.

The parmentier created with braised duck leg, celery purée and diced celery rounded out this rich flavored Challans noodle dish prior to jumping into my desserts.

Pre-dessert was chilled strawberry soup that has a small strawberry salad concealed underneath a strawberry flavored meringue disc.

There has been a scoop of sour cream sorbet there to complete the knee cleansing.

Petite fours came with the signature dome on the plate!

The last course of the meal has been lemon yuzu world with a tarragon lemon candy and vanilla mousse center, served on a pool of lemon jelly and shortbread. Considering all the lemon zesty tastes, they strove to balance it with their homemade tarragon olive oil ice-cream though without much success (the olive oil ice-cream was seriously great though!) .

My decision to bypass the cheese course ended up netting me a second dessert. It was a much appreciated bonus dish from Chef Thierry and I must sayI enjoyed this one a great deal longer than my first (and original) dessert.

The creamy 80 percent dark chocolate was wonderfully paired with tender biscuit and caramelized pecan nuts praline but that which tied everything together nicely was the spoonful of Pot created with older whisky.

Another bonus dessert on on top of the bonus chocolate dessert, a chocolate tart served with Chartreuse flavored marshmallow.

I insisted I have had enough wine for tonight (in the whisky ice-cream) so that I ended up having the liqueur-less marshmallow using the super rich flavored and sweet chocolate sour instead.

I forgot just how many times I used the word”amazing” to describe tonight’s dishes but it had to be more than a few. It was really good to see Chef Thierry again and although 10,000 Baht (after factoring in all of the surcharges) was a little steep a price to pay for a meal at Bangkok, it was money well spent considering the unique (chef’s desk ) encounter, exemplary cooking along with incredible vibe (and view).

Could Chef’s Table have sufficient to eventually become the most popular three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Bangkok? I’m not entirely certain if it will happen this year but as a long-time admirer of Chef Thierry’s exquisite contemporary French cuisine, I am certainly rooting for it.
